CHAPTER 9 – Sarah
Sarah sat in front of Jake on the horse as they rode towards home. She made sure she kept her back as stiff as she could so she wouldn’t accidentally brush against him. He had dragged her rather unceremoniously from where she was starting to climb into the wagon and practically thrown her on his horse. Before she had even had a chance to argue, he had turned his horse and was galloping away from town.
She could only imagine what Andrew and Beth would be thinking as they followed behind in the wagon.
Jake seemed committed to making her angry at every turn. It was almost as though he was trying to make her hate him. After his performance today, she was so glad she had decided to go through with sending for annulment papers. He really was a brute of a man, and now that she saw the kind of woman he was truly attracted to, she was glad to be getting free of him.
She tried to convince herself the truth in her words as they rode in silence.
“You will have a mighty sore back if you stay that rigid all the way back to the ranch.” He seemed to be taunting her, knowing how angry she was, to relax and lean herself into him. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.
“I’m fine. I can live with a sore back.” She didn’t care if her spine broke in half, she would sit like this the rest of the way home.
“Suit yourself.” He kicked his heels into the horse, taking off at a faster pace. She had no choice but to lean back or she would have surely been on the ground in a heap.
She was sure she could sense his lips moving into a grin, and she wished she could turn around and slap the smile right off his face. Instead, she focused on hanging on for her life as he kept the horse going as fast as he could.
After they got far enough ahead of the others, he slowed the horse back down. She was lost in her thoughts so didn’t even notice she could have sat back up again.
How could Jake have possibly ever had feelings for a woman like Anna? She couldn’t understand how someone she had become to know as honorable and kind, even if he didn’t show it to her, would fall in love with someone so hateful?
Perhaps she hadn’t always been like that, and losing Jake had caused her to become bitter. She just didn’t think anyone could change that much.
The part that stung the most, if she was completely honest with herself, was the fact that he could love someone so spiteful and mean, yet not let himself care for someone like her. What was wrong with her that he couldn’t bring himself to fall in love with her?
She tried not to let her thoughts consume her, but as they rode in silence, she couldn’t think of anything else. She felt
